The best Internet Explorer Ad Blocker?

I hear often the same question more or less: what's the best free antivirus? the best defragmenter? the best firewall? and so on... You will be disappointed. There's no such a thing. The best is what it suits you and your computer. Don't trust random reviews and don't trust self proclaimed IT gurus. Not everything you read on the web is bad of course, but you should keep in mind all the time when you read a review that it might be a paid one (money are not a bad thing though) so take caution.

You should trust this page after reading the first sentences? Well that depends; but here's few reasons that might make you trust my advice: I'm not getting paid for doing this; the page you are browsing in this very moment doesn't come with any advertisements ads or Pop-ups -- so again there's no money involved; why I'm doing this? for fun and for pleasure, and because I'm really tired to see a lot of people arguing over ''the best this or that'' argument on different websites.

Although you might not expect it, Internet Explorer is still the world's second most popular browser with hundreds of millions of daily users. Below you'll find a small list of Internet Explorer ad-blocking addons that I recently tried and will help you get rid of ads on IE 10 and IE 11.

Free Internet Explorer Adblock programs:

AdFender - The Ultimate Ad Blocker

AdFender is a adblocking software that runs alongside your web browser and allows you to speed up web browsing and save bandwidth by blocking banner ads, video ads, pop-ups and floating ads. AdFender runs on 32/64 bit versions of Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, and XP(SP2 or SP3). AdFender works with all leading web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera. In addition to this AdFender also supports AOL Browser, Avant Browser, Chromium, Comodo Dragon, Epic, Flock, Ice Dragon, K-Meleon, Lunascape, Maxthon, Pale Moon, QtWeb Internet Browser, RockMelt, SRWare Iron, Waterfox and Yandex.

Note: If you are (still) running Windows Vista or higher, check if your browser is running with elevated privileges. If your browser is running with elevated privileges, you can right click the AdFender tray icon, and select the option "Run as administrator" to run AdFender with elevated privileges. Verify your firewall settings to make sure AdFender is allowed to connect to the Internet. You also may configure your browser to use AdFender as it's HTTP proxy. The host name or proxy address should be set to "127.0.0.1" (your own computer) and the port should be set to 7070 (default). Please refer to your browser help manual on how to manually configure HTTP proxy settings.

You can open the AdFender main console by double-clicking the AdFender icon in the system tray. From the main console, you can customize your AdFender settings and view filtering statistics, for instance. Right-clicking the AdFender tray icon brings up the tray menu which offers additional options.

Adblock Plus for IE

Adblock Plus removes all the annoying ads from your Internet Explorer browser. It helps you get rid of all the pop-ups and blinking banners, even will disable ads in YouTube and block ads in your Facebook news feed. Adblock Plus is further equipped with security and privacy protection settings. It protects you from malware, tracking and it can also disable social media buttons.

Note: Out of the box, Adblock Plus allows non-intrusive ads in order to encourage better ads (for those who want zero ads, opt out is super easy). Here’s how you can turn off the whitelist feature and block all ads on Internet Explorer: click the Adblock Plus icon in the status bar on the right, then choose Options and uncheck "Allow non-intrusive advertising."

Ad Muncher

Ad Muncher was previously Shareware, and after 15 years of development, it is now available as Freeware. Ad Muncher will delete ads in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and all other browsers. Ad Muncher is designed to work immediately after installing. You won't need to spend days setting up filters, and can enjoy faster and safer browsing immediately.

Paid Internet Explorer Adblock programs:

Del Ad - Adblocker for Internet Explorer

Del Ad is a fast and efficient adblocker for Internet Explorer. Del Ad removes annoying advertisements from the websites and also protects your online privacy. Del Ad is designed for all current versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, including Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1. Unlike other adblocker add-ons, Del Ad blocks ads before they are downloaded. Web pages will load faster, because Internet Explorer does not waste time downloading ads. Del Ad will periodically check for new filter subscriptions and downloads updates automatically to give you the best adblocker experience possible. If there is a new software update available, you will be notified automatically. Del Ad has a 30-days time limit, and requires a license key to continue to function beyond the evaluation period (US$19.95).

Adguard – Adblock extension for Internet Explorer

Adguard Adblock for Edge

Unlike the free Adblock Plus extension for Internet Explorer, the Adguard ad blocker works at the system level and "turn off" the advertising immediately across all browsers. It silently works in the background and automatically removes pop-ups, banners and video ads from the pages you visit, thereby saving your traffic and reducing the page loading time. Apart from blocking ads, the program also keeps you away from phishing and malicious websites, protecting both the users and the computers. Adguard also includes Parental Control. This module will help you to protect your child from visiting websites with undesirable content. Adguard is an install-and-forget program. Installation process will take no longer than 3 minutes. After that, you just surf the internet as you usually do. At the moment there are fully operating versions for Windows OS, Android-based devices, and also browser extensions for all wide-spread and most popular browsers. Adguard supports both 32x and 64x Windows versions. Adguard cost US$19.95 per year. However, a free trial period of 14 days is available, allowing you to try it before you buy.

The best Free Internet Explorer Ad blocking software:

If you are looking for a free Internet Explorer ad-blocking program, Adguard is the first one from the list you should try. Adblock Plus is the way to go if you are looking for something free; but the Adblock Plus controversial business model, the Acceptable Ads program where Web publishers must pay to be whitelisted, it has opened itself to accusations of conducting businesses in a mafia-like way, a modern-day protection racket.Nevertheless, once you have disabled the ''Acceptable Ads'' feature (explained above), Adblock Plus does exactly what is expected to. Very good for beginners and experienced users.

Ad Muncher is good but Ad Muncher doesn't filter HTTPS. Apparently Ad Muncher is not (fully) compatible with Windows 8.1 at the moment totally ignoring IE11, they are supposed to be working on an update but who knows when it will be out.

AdFender is a decent unobtrusive adblock software that works great both with IE10 and IE11. It's a standalone program, it blocks every ad in every browser installed, no more need to use browser plugins. Similar to Ad Muncher, AdFender does not filter secure web pages (browser address bar starts with https://).

The best Paid Internet Explorer Ad blocking software:

Adguard. Works with IE11 (even 64-bit IE11 with/without Enhanced Protected Mode too!) along with the Metro/Modern UI versions of browsers including IE11 and it supports Windows 8/8.1. It also supports HTTPS site filtering, which is something Ad Muncher/Adfender don't (currently) do. And Adguard is updated frequently - it was updated just days ago.

Del Ad it's way better than extension-based ad blocking (which is subject to browser API limitations) and is better than Ad Muncher and Adfender as well, in my opinion. Del Ad is not better than Adguard, but if you sometimes feel overwhelmed by the number of the Adguard settings, you should give Del Ad a try. So when comparing system resources, Del Ad is extremely lightweight too. It is NOT as powerful as Adguard but it still is an EXCELLENT alternative. So, if you want a fast loading, extremely lightweight adblocker, “Del Ad” is a bloody serious looking utility, thumbs up!
